History of Multimeter
The history of multimeter lets us get aware of so many new things such as earlier when multimeter was not invented; galvanometer was used to measure the current. Galvanometers were the first moving-pointer current-detecting device; they were the first device that incorporated a moving pointer. Galvanometers were also used to measure resistances and voltages using Wheatstone bridge. They are used today also, but considering several drawbacks such as they were bulky and highly delicate also they were quite impractical as they did not use to give the exact result, it became difficult for engineers and electricians to use. The first Galvanometer was designed in the year 1820.

Further the D’Arsonval/Weston meter came which used a moving coil carrying a pointer which rotates on pivots or a taut based ligament. The coil used to rotate in a permanent magnetic field and was restrained by a fine spiral spring which was also used to carry current into the moving coil. Multimeter gives proportional measurement rather than just detection. However, deflection is independent of the orientation of the meter, instead of bridges values are directly displayed on the meter, thus multimeters made the measurements comparatively quick and easy.
